Refurbishment of Existing Unit

Refurbishment of Existing Unit.

Location // Sowerby Bridge

Rosehill Polymers have developed a unique business utilising polymer.  Starting from producing soft matting for children’s play areas, they have expanded and now produce level crossings for the rail industry, having just been awarded a national contract for Belgium, and they have just been awarded the contract by Highways England to form the safe lay-bys on smart motorways.

They have built up their business by being loyal to their roots and their staff, so it was important, to them, to maintain their production at Sowerby Bridge.

The unit at Sowerby Bridge has existed for nearly 100 years.  To meet the needs of is various owners, the building has been extended numerous times.  The extensions had left numerous messy gutters and intersections which were now prone to leaking.  The client had built a mono-pitch extension in 2004 to accommodate the office staff.  The client’s aspirations were to put a new roof over three existing roofs to meet up with the relatively new mono-pitch roof.

NU were approached direct by the client, and collated a design team including Structural Engineer, Steel Fabricator and Cladding Contractor.

All parties worked to devise solutions to the many challenges.  The biggest challenge was coordinating the works while the client remained in production during a particularly busy period, made more difficult by the uncertainty of his material deliveries resulting from Brexit, the pandemic and eventually the war in Ukraine.

To avoid disruption to the clients works inside his facility, the new columns were designed to sit outside the building.  The columns were galvanised to ensure durability.

The service yard and the internal factory remained live.  This required tight coordination between NU and Rosehill Polymers.  Due to the erratic deliveries by the client’s supply chain, a flexible approach had to be adopted.  The biggest issue which arose was having to move the crane on 2No occasions.
